Earlier this week we introduced you to a new hip hop duo, Phase One & Asa Buchanon, with an exclusive leak from their up coming album Bugnanas. The album is simply that… bugnanas! Until I’ve been given permission to leak more material from the album, I figured we’d catch up with the emcee known as Phase One and the producer Asa Buchanon. Hit the cut to get to know these cats…

Where You Reppin?

Asa: We rep the Boogie & the whole Tri-state

Introduce Yourself:

Phase: Peace Kev/World my name is “Phase One”

Asa: I’m the Abominable “Asa Buchanon”

Current projects we should be looking out for?

Asa: Current projects…BUGNANAS

Phase: I reply the same Bugnanas, Bugnanas & more Bugnanas is what think people need to look out for. Please get familiar and add that name to your state of mind & vocabulary lol….

Previous work that we should know about:

Phase: Far as previous projects for me, I’ve had an album years ago (Hip Hop, Rap and the Taboo, Life Music and Soul) and a mix tape (Phasing the Music) I put out 2 or 3years ago. Both extremely different places from where I am today. The first album I admit was my humble beginnings where I am on a quest to find myself. The mix tape later on was to show people how I’ve grown but never left & what you are about to see and experience (Bugnanas) is up to you to decide for yourself. Since the “Phasing the Music” Mix tape I’ve been working on a what I would to call a master piece of work for 2 ½ years that started going in a path I didn’t approve of which lead to the A.S.A.P. creation and Production of “Bugnanas” which only took 3 months (track selecting, writing, recording & mixing) to make as a whole. Crazy isn’t it? I would say honestly that I have been more of a performer of the projects I’ve been working on along the way than having a lot of it out there. I know & am aware in the day we live in that isn’t enough but we (Asa & Myself) are definitely and I mean DEFINITELY in gear with something special for the people (At least we think).

Main musical inspirations:

Asa: Late 80’s/ early to mid 90’s Hip Hop is a big influence in our sound along with the Detroit underground scene

Phase: My main musical inspirations are from the early 90’s – 2000. From day one my inspiration has always derived from Philly, Detroit, LA & of course New York City.

If you had to pick one song that defines your career to date, what song would that be?

Asa: “One song to define my career at this point?” I’m not sure if you mean one of our songs or a song we are a fan of ? But if I had to pick one of our songs it would be “Gone with The Wind” only because I’m on a ride with GOD and when you turn to GOD a lot of people won’t understand certain decisions and moves you make, but the most high does so “brotha I’m gone)))))” and btw that is what the metaphoric meaning of the term “Wind” is in the title (GOD).

Phase: That is a difficult question to answer because I am pretty sure to the listeners and readers, I am brand new to them and are not familiar with Who/what I am capable of doing musically yet. From those that do know me from being on the performing scene there are a few records that define my career. To this date though I think a song that defines where I am at mentally and spiritually in my career is the first leak “Confunk-Shun”. It’s to the point of what we trying to do with “Bugnanas” and going forward. Which is also the reason I started it by saying “Yeah lets start from the gate/Phase ain’t for play/though I play in this game”

Why should the readers and fans give you a shot and listen to your music from here on out?

Asa: I feel the fans/readers should give us a chance b/c what we have to offer musically is something you haven’t heard in a looooong time, & hopefully it will inspire up and coming artist to really think outside the box when there being creative.

Phase: I feel fans & the readers should give us shot because everyone is either asking for something new or searching for the next refreshing thing. Great music today is like finding a needle in the haystack. I personally feel & can probably speak for Asa as well, at this very point “We” feel that we could rightfully be those needles making themselves available to be found by the eyes & ears through channels like this avenue that you’re providing for us Kevin among others. Just like other great artist or groups that have reached the surface upon us through a co-sign or just them trucking through the trails, “YOU” as the fans/readers still had to give them a chance…that is all I/WE ask for is that chance….

What’s next for you?

Asa: What’s next is to get the world to know what “Bugnanas” sounds like & to have the world know who Phase One and Asa Buchanon are.

Phase: Could not have said it better myself…

If you could only take one record on a deserted island with you, what album would that be?

Phase: I know you said one but it all depends on how I feel the day I am taking off for this island lolol its either going to be a cross between: ATCQ: Midnight Marauders, Slum Village: Fantastic Vol.2, Common: Like Water for Chocolate &/or The Roots: Things Fall Apart, Jaylib or Madvillainy.

Asa: That’s a hard question, I hate that question, but for me….BDK: Long Live The Kane

*When ya’ll get to listen to “Bugnanas” you’ll understand why those were my picks

Any shout outs or last words?

Phase: First, Asa & I would like to thank you Kevin for this opportunity and for being the first official Super Blogger to the flood “Bugnanas” through the gates. The pleasure is truly ours!!! Thanks to those who had faith in us and never turned away when for whichever reason could’ve. Lastly, Peace and love to my I.C. Family who in due time you will get to know in the future.

Asa: I feel Phase captured everything I would’ve said with the shouts thank you Kevin…

Listen, it is about time I can listen to something that is reminiscent of what I listen to coming up, with that has enough of a modernize twist to still interest my 13 year old. Good Form!
